DVD Review – Biblical Mysteries Explained

When it comes to ancient history there aren’t many other subjects that capture my imagination as much as that does. Not only the share time scale, in human years, but the real sense that we still don’t know a lot about the things that happened back then. There really are genuine mysteries involved in everything from how things were built, lives lived, belief structures and other such things. So, when you throw into the mix religious texts, it can put another whole spin on the subject of ancient history. I guess that’s where my fascination for religion came from as it’s so intrinsically intertwined with the past that you can’t really study one without an interest in the other. I’m as far away from being a religious person as you can get, but that doesn’t mean the subject doesn’t fascinate me greatly.

“Explore the greatest events of the Bible and see how new scientific discoveries can explain how they happened. A new breed of scientist proclaims that natural mega-disasters are part of the earth’s heritage, such as super-volcanoes, asteroid strikes, global warming, and polar ice-melt – they’ve all happened in the past and will happen again. According to this science, ancient mega-disasters were recorded by early man in folk legends, primitive myths, ancient chronicles and the Bible itself.”

When I first started watching this I had a funny feeling it would be a little biased and be more bible bashing the science to fit. In fact it ended up delivering a pretty balanced argument about the three subjects it covered and I came away feeling rather well informed with a whole bunch of new knowledge. In fact, I found the 3rd episode the most interesting as it covered the Nostic gospels and the mysteries behind where they came from and why they are no longer part of the modern bible. A lot of this stuff I had read about in the past, but it’s always nice seeing a documentary series put everything into order with a well made show. So, though not exactly proving, or disproving bible events, it did go a long way to once again convincing me all is not right with what we know of the past.

8 out of 10 from me.
